The Promise Fulfilled

Sermon Notes of
Reverend Harvey Alford Matney
(1868 – 1951)
February 25, 1917 – San Felipe, Texas

Introduction

Jesus told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem to receive the promised Holy Spirit. This was very important to the early church. They were encouraged while Jesus was with them, but they still weren’t ready to do all that was required. After the Holy Spirit came, there was nothing that could stop them.

In this sermon, my grandfather discusses the Holy Spirit’s arrival at Pentecost. — Harrison Woodard

(1868 – 1951)
March 28, 1926 – Glenwood UMC (Tyler), Texas

Introduction

Jesus never demanded anyone worship or accept Him. He came to the door and knocked, but never kicked the door down. He did the will of God for His life – healing the sick, walking in love and teaching people how the Kingdom of God operates. He would often tell people that had been delivered to “tell no man.” But His fame spread nonetheless.

Jesus’ Conception of Himself and His Mission – Part 1

Sermon Notes of
Reverend Harvey Alford Matney
(1868 – 1951)
March 14, 1926 – Glenwood UMC (Tyler), Texas

Introduction

A major challenge Jesus faced during His time on earth was appealing to the many competing views on the Messiah’s purpose. Jesus came to do God’s will for His life and demonstrate God’s love to the world. For many, a loving, healing, problem-solving, burden-bearing, sin-removing Savior was not what was expected.

The Search For Christ

Sermon Notes of
Reverend Harvey Alford Matney
(1868 – 1951)
December 24, 1911 – Chappell Hill, Texas

Introduction

I always wondered about how these men were so moved to travel across the continent to search out a little child. They had a star as their guide we are told in the Bible. They obviously had divine wisdom or had studied the Word. How else could they have known Jesus was “King of the Jews?”
