Jesus Heals A Daughter Of Abraham Of A Spirit Of Infirmity

Based on Luke 13:10-17

For 18 years the woman went to worship at her synagogue. She had been bent over so long hardly anyone even noticed her pain and humiliation anymore. But she loved God and knew that He was the only answer to her problem. So Jesus said, “Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity!”

She had visited physicians and specialists, but they could do nothing for her. This was not just a physical problem. There was a spirit of infirmity that prevented her from standing straight and oppressed her all these many years.

Like so many Sabbaths before, she went to hear the Word of God. But today was very different. There was a prophet in town that taught about a God of mercy and a covenant keeping God. She remembered the covenant that God made with Abraham, and she was his descendant. This man was Jesus, and He spoke with authority and love.

Jesus saw the woman bowed by satan and said, Woman thou art loosed. Bible story found in Luke 13:10-17

And there was a woman there who for eighteen years had had an infirmity caused by a spirit (a demon of sickness). She was bent completely forward and utterly unable to straighten herself up or to look upward. And when Jesus saw her, He called [her to Him] and said to her, Woman, you are released from your infirmity! — Luke 13:11-12 AMP

And then Jesus saw her in the crowd, not just with his eyes. He saw the real person inside and the spirit that had held her in bondage for nearly two decades. With much compassion Jesus proclaimed, “Woman, you are free from that infirmity!”

Nobody had ever spoken like that to her before. Just the thought of standing straight and doing things like everybody else filled her heart with joy. Could she really be healed? Was she really free?

As she pondered God’s Word, Jesus touched her. It was not just a physical touch. It was the touch of love from her Savior. She immediately received her healing inside and out, and stood up straight and tall.

The crowd erupted with shouts of praise to God. They all knew who she was and what she had endured. This was truly a miracle that glorified God.  Few people in that crowd would ever doubt His power or love again.

But the ruler of the synagogue was angry. This was the wrong day to heal folks. He had witnessed this mighty manifestation of God, heard the praise of the people. and was offended. It might have been a little jealousy that he had been upstaged by Jesus. Or just a good case of religious stupidity, but he wanted to make his point.

“There are six days when we are to work. Those are the days you should come and be healed,” claimed the ruler.

Strangely, during the previous 5600 “work” days that this woman suffered, the religious leaders never found time to get this woman loosed.

Jesus, who pulled no punches when it came to religious hypocrisy responded, “You hypocrite! You feed and water your animals on the Sabbath. Should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, be freed from her infirmity on the Sabbath?”

The religious leader said no more. He understood the point and was ashamed of his remarks.

The people praised God for setting this woman free. Her testimony of God’s love and mercy was spread throughout the area.

Woman Thou Art Loosed – Luke 13 Commentary

13 Then He laid [His] hands on her, and instantly she was made straight, and she recognized and thanked and praised God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, There are six days on which work ought to be done; so come on those days and be cured, and not on the Sabbath day.
Luke 13:13-14 AMP

Loosed! The woman had been bound by a spirit of infirmity for 18 years. But Jesus said, Woman, Thou art loosed. And she stood up straight. Luke 13:10-17

The ultimate source for all sickness is Satan. When Adam sinned, the curse entered creation, which includes sickness, disease, poverty and all the other evil things in the world. For the people of the Old Testament, God made a covenant with Abraham, and to all his descendants, that provided healing. When Jesus came, he provided an even better covenant that also provides for complete healing and wholeness for all who believe. One of the most important lessons to learn from this miracle is that God does NOT make you sick. Satan bound this woman, not God. God, through the ministry of Jesus (the Word – John 1), freed this woman from her infirmity. Don’t ever let religion or religious tradition, convince you that God wants his children sick. Satan steals, kills and destroys. But Jesus came to give you life in abundance, to the full, until it overflows. You are the body of Christ. He does not want there to even be a hangnail on the pinky toe of His Body. Praise God! (Genesis 15; Exodus 15:26, 23:25; Deuteronomy 28; Job 1; Psalm 91; John 10:10; Acts 10:38; 1 Corinthians 6:15-20; Galatians 3; Ephesians 6; 1 John 3:8)

Jesus bore all sickness, sin, death and the entire curse on your behalf. If Jesus had healed this woman the next day, the religious leader would have had no cause to be offended. But Jesus said that she was a daughter of Abraham – a covenant child of God. She should not have to wait one more day! If you don’t retain anything else from this miracle, at least remember this – GOD WANTS YOU WELL! NOW! And He is willing to break a few man-made rules and ruffle some religious feathers to get you healed. That is VERY good news. (Numbers 21:7-9 & John 3:14-17; Psalm 103; Isaiah 53 & 1 Peter 2:24; Matthew 8; James 5:13-16)

Bound For 18 Years, Loosed In A Day

18 years is a very long time to suffer with a spirit of infirmity. But with Jesus, the bent over woman was loosed in a day. God wants you whole and happy. Luke 13:10-17

15 But the Lord replied to him, saying, You playactors (hypocrites)! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it out to water it? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?
Luke 13:15-16 AMP

The woman from Luke 13 had been in bondage for 18 years. The cause was a spirit of infirmity, a demonic agent that kept her permanently bent over and unable to live a normal life. The number 18 is the number that represents bondage in the Bible. When the people forgot God, and chased after other gods breaking the 1st Commandment (Exodus 20:2-3), they would find themselves in bondage to other nations. This can be seen especially in the time after Joshua’s generation died. (Judges 10:1-23) Israel was clearly instructed that when they bowed before other gods, they would not enjoy God’s favor and protection. (Leviticus 26:14–46) Another interesting connection, there were 18 judges in Israel before Saul became King of Israel.

There is no evidence that this woman had rejected God. But she may have allowed sin into her life, giving satan a crack to slip through and oppress her. Many things can distract and lead you away from God’s protection. Astrology, gambling, perversion, occult practices – any sin can be an opening for the enemy. But thankfully, she met Jesus. She was loosed and set free. Its easy for Believers to avoid similar situations. Submit to God’s Love. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Jesus came to set you FREE. Enjoy your Liberty in Christ! (John 8:28-36, Galatians 5:1, Ephesians 4:22-32 6:10-18, James 4:1-10, 1 Peter 5:6-11)
